Two years ago I set a goal for our family. Visit 10 countries over the next 2 years. Did we achieve our goal? YES! So far we have been to the following countries:

  1. Germany - Dusseldorf, Achen, Koln, Munich, Trier, Rothenburg, Frankfurt and many more
  2. France - Paris, Goujounac, Dijon, Disneyland
  3. United Kingdom - London, Cambridge
  4. Netherlands - Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Delft, Keukenhoff, Neijkirk
  5. Switzerland - Engelburg, Zurich, Lusanne
  6. Italy - Rome, Florence, Milan, Lake Como, Pisa
  7. Luxembourg - no list of cities since it's a really small country
  8. Austria - just passed through, but we did stop for lunch. OK it was just McDonald's but doesn't it still count?
  9. Belgium - We live here but I think we get to count it! I feel like we have seen every square foot but we still have lots left to see.
  10. Drum roll for #10.....Egypt - We leave Tuesday for Cairo!
  11. China - We travel there just before our 2nd anniversary of living in Europe.

We made it. We reached our goal. I didn't really keep track nor did we set out to travel nonstop. Our trips worked around the kids and their school schedules. Now it is time to set a new goal-Travel to 4 more countries in the next year. Any suggestions?

Disneyland - the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

We had a long weekend beginning last Thursday and took advantage of our extra time off school. Bob actually took some time off too and Maria took a break from studying to have a little family fun. We love Disneyland, if you hadn't already figured that out, and just had to use our season passes one more time. The weather was typical for May in Europe although I am really tired of seeing pictures of us on the same rides at Disney wearing scarves and coats in every photo no matter what month it happens to be.

So first I will show you the GOOD part of Disney. At one point we laughed so hard we cried!
And now the bad. One of these pictures is a bad thing about Disney. The other picture is a bad part of life. You will easily be able to figure out which picture is which!

If you know Maria at all, you know that this look on her face signifies disgust and impatience. She lets her feelings know in very small ways. It is in her eyes and you probably have to click on the picture to see it bigger. In one look she is saying, "This stupid French man has no idea how to get a Fast Pass for the Big Thunder Mountain roller coaster. I have been waiting behind this idiot for over 5 minutes and what I really want to do is rip the cards out of his hands and do it for him. Finally, this Disney employee is going to help, but I have still wasted precious Disney time waiting in line."

I don't complain about the French people that much because overall they are very nice people who enjoy a good meal and a nice glass of wine. The only problem is that they are somewhat annoying and they smoke a lot. No offense to all my French friends, especially Sophie. She is wonderful.

This picture has nothing to do with Disney but more to do with aging. Don't click on it and make it bigger. That might be too shocking! Isn't Bob's camera nice? It picks up every wrinkle, line and gray hair. What clarity. It doesn't look like it, but I am really having a good time. I am not a fan of Botox but this picture would make a really good "before" shot. Use your imagination as to what the "after" picture would look like!

Finally, there is an UGLY part of Disney. I don't have a picture of it because I don't think it is legal to take pictures of these guys that we see every time we are there. There are armed guards outside the gates near the parking lot and the train station. It is always unsettling to see these police carrying machine guns and pacing along the pathway. I am not sure about the reason or the need for this type of protection. I will keep Googling it to find an answer.

Anyway, we had fun and here is the best part. The kids don't know it yet, but our next Disney trip will be to DISNEYLAND HONG KONG in July!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has it really been 10 days since my last entry? I will post pictures right now! We just got back from Disneyland and have some excellent pictures to share. Leah and Jennifer have promised to write their own entries about their trip to Florence when they have some time this weekend.

Jennifer said,

"Mom, I have something special planned for you tomorrow at 8am. Could you set your alarm for 6 so you can wake me up? Oh wait you probably don't want to get up that early! Ok just set your alarm for 6, wake me up, show me how to cook eggs and make coffee and then go back to bed. OK?"

People have emailed to say they cannot see the pictures from the directions below without putting in a username or password. Just email me if you want the info so you can log on to the ISB website. I just didn't think I should put it out there for everyone to see.

Leah and Jennifer - Pictures of the Florence Field Trip

Once again I am amazed at the opportunities my kids have had while living in Brussels, attending an international school and opening their hearts and minds to a new world. Sending Leah and Jennifer all the way to Florence, Italy, for a field trip was beyond my imagination. We dropped them off at school on Sunday and watched as they drove away on a grand adventure. (Side note...Of course we have this brand new camera but we left it at home and have NO PICTURES of the bus rolling away or all the 6th graders lined up in the Belgian rain ready to to go!)
To keep the parents informed while the kids are gone for 5 days, the teachers post pictures on the school website each evening. I have included the link to all the pictures but to see them you have to follow some directions...
1. Click on the link below.
2. You will see BlackBoard, the school site. Find the tiny words "Grade 6" on the left hand side of the screen and click on it.
3. At the next screen click on "Information". It is on the left side of the screen again.
4. Now click on "Extended Field Trip 2010". There is a picture of Florence below it.
5. Go down to the last choice available "6TS in Florence - Monday" and click on it.
6. You should now see the title page of Leah and Jennifer's first day pictures in Florence. There are 34 pictures that you should be able to view.
7. Enjoy!
