After a very busy day we had the most wonderful meal at Quanjude, the famous restaurant in Beijing which sells only Peking Duck. Quanjude has many locations throughout Beijing. With four floors at our location (the most popular), it sells over 5,000 duck meals per night. This dish is one of China's national foods.
There was no question that we must eat Peking Duck while in Beijing!! We have figured out that ordering is a challenge at all the restaurants because very few people speak English. We asked for the typical duck dinner with rice. Somehow, we also received duck soup and an odd celery/cabbage type vegetable that we would see over and over again. At the end of the meal, we also had watermelon. It must have been watermelon season in China because we had it 3 times a day, every single day!!
All the ducks were carved table side and all the carvers wore masks.
Our server was very nice and welcoming. He knew we were tourists and made the meal very grand and official! He showed us how to eat the duck with its little pancakes and onions using Jennifer's plate as the sample.
Every part of the duck was carved and served to us. Even the head was cut off and plated. Bob ate the brain. What a brave traveler he is!!
I know we will never forget this meal.

Yum, I love duck, and especially duck soup. It was one of my favorite quick cheap meals when I lived in Bloomington. Not sure I'd be brave enough though to try duck brain. Kudos to Bob!
