Sicily-Monreale above Palermo

High above the city of Palermo is the Monreale Cathedral. This church is covered from floor to ceiling with mosaics. A close up is below.
We arrived in Monreale after our tour of the famous market (remember that goat picture?). It was 1:00pm and like everything else in Sicily, the church was closed until 3:30. We spent the afternoon browsing in shops, eating gelato and basking in the bright sun. I heard comments like, "This better be worth it." and "Great planning Julie." When we finally went into the church we were amazed.

All the pictures are made of little glass pieces fitted together to depict scenes from the bible. The idea originally stemmed from the church's desire to educate the illiterate peasants of the community.
Above and outside the church is a secluded convent. Bob took the girls way up to the top to get wonderful views but I stayed below because of my broken foot.

The church was worth the wait and an site we won't forget.
